Calder win the House Debates

Congratulations to Sanad, Ellen and Lucy from Calder who won the annual House Debating Competition, against Bowland in the final.

The topic for debate was an extremely interesting one, focussing on whether Shakespeare should be decolonised due to questions around whether the famous playwright’s work could now be considered to feature racial stereotypes and promote themes of ‘white supremacy’.

Each team chose to argue either ‘For’ or ‘Against’, putting forth their arguments to the judging panel of Mrs Corrigan, Mr Fialho and Mrs Moore.

Both teams debated extremely well, and appreciation was shown by the crowd of students and staff who had gathered to watch in the LRC. Eventually, Calder were ruled to be winners after what proved to be a tough decision for the judges.

Thanks to Amelie, who chaired the debates throughout the final round.

Well done, Calder!
