The aims of A Level Latin are multifaceted. Firstly, it encourages students to deepen their understanding of the Latin language and its application to classical texts. Secondly, it fosters an appreciation for the nuances of linguistic and stylistic features within original prose and verse literature. The Classics department delivers engaging and educational lessons, inviting students to immerse themselves in the richness of the language and its historical context. Furthermore, we regularly run trips both in the UK and abroad to give our students an immersive learning experience.

Students who study Latin are highly valued by universities and employers due to their logical thinking, evidenced evaluations, and clear ability to express themselves. For this reason, Latin can be combined with pretty much any combination of subjects. Career paths may include going into academia, translation, law, journalism, and other diverse fields like computing, civil service, insurance, and public relations. The versatility of Latin studies opens doors to a range of professions. Notably J.R.R Tolkein, the renowned author of ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ studied Classics at university alongside C.S. Lewis and other pivotal figures.

Latin complements a range of subjects such as:
