Junior Journalists

Westholme’s Junior Journalist club welcomed a special visitor this week – former journalist Lisa Egan-Woodhouse.

Lisa, who used to work for titles such as the Lancashire Telegraph, Manchester Evening News, Accrington Observer, Rossendale Free Press and Stockport Express, told the Prep-R, 1 and 2 children the differences between a lead story and a nib (news in brief), a splash and a headline during the visit.

The children asked some great questions, such as “how many newspapers have your articles featured in”, “why did you work with other journalists” and “why did you want to become a journalist”, as well as sharing knowledge they have learnt from their history topics – such as newspapers previously being used to wrap fish and chips!

The children also got the opportunity to learn a little about shorthand – a special language that looks a lot like squiggles – used by journalists. Lisa wrote out each of their names on a whiteboard, and the club worked out a phrase using a key.
