Prep 6 WW2 museum trip
This week, Prep 6 visited Western Approaches WW2 Museum in Liverpool. First, we looked at artefacts to infer if the belongings on our table belonged to an evacuee, submariner, warden, fire guard, soldier or home cook. Next, we watched the declaration of war and a news reel about what to do in an air raid. Finally we looked at rationing and why it was introduced, and put our own weekly menus together, keeping them under 100 points. Did you know, children received more rations than adults as they needed the correct nutrition, that some foods weren’t rationed or that clothes were rationed too?
After lunch, we had a tour of the premises: we were in an actual bunker used in the war. We learned that the people working there might have worked for 72 hours at a time and had to eat beetroot and sawdust ‘jam’ sandwiches on their first day! We explored the roles of the workers, how to decode Morse Code, and in the Main Operations room we explored how the WRNS tracked ships and the WAF tracked aircraft.
To end the day, we had a lesson from someone in the army on how to listen to commands, march and salute. We had a fantastic day and this helped us considerably with our knowledge of WW2.
