Westholme INSPIRED Sixth Form TED Talks: Confidence, Curiosity and Big Ideas

This academic year, Westholme School proudly launched a new INSPIRED Sixth Form TED Talks enrichment programme, giving students the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and deliver an academic lecture on a subject they are genuinely passionate about.

Designed to stretch confidence, deepen independent research and develop high-level communication skills, the programme challenges students to prepare, refine and present their ideas to a large audience. From the very first talks, our Sixth Form students rose to the challenge, confidently holding their audiences’ attention with articulate, engaging and well-researched presentations.

The TED Talks delivered so far have explored a diverse and impressive range of topics, including:

• Aerodynamics in Formula 1

• X-Ray Crystallography and DNA

• Adding Value Before Profit: The Purpose of Real Business

• Sports Analytics in Premier League Football

• Fractals in Mathematics

• Corruption in FIFA

What stood out most was the journey the students undertook. Initial nerves and uncertainty were gradually replaced with confidence, excitement and pride as their talks took shape – a clear testament to their resilience, preparation and commitment to academic excellence.

The school would like to extend sincere thanks to Mrinalini Dey, Matt Messias and Nikki Dean, whose mentorship and encouragement played a vital role in supporting students throughout the process and empowering them to perform at such a high level.

Together, these talks showcased not only academic curiosity, but also critical thinking, ethical awareness and the ability to connect complex ideas to real-world contexts – hallmarks of the INSPIRED Sixth Form ethos.

We are incredibly proud of all the students involved and look forward to seeing this programme continue to grow. The standard has been set high, and future TED Talks promise even more confidence, challenge and inspiration.
