Pastoral Care

There is a strong sense of community at Westholme. We aim to provide a caring and safe environment through our pastoral care structure, in which each pupil is able to realise their full academic, social, cultural and sporting potential. Our values are based on respect for every member of the community, on thoughtfulness and courtesy.

Pastoral Care at Westholme: Nurturing the Whole Child

At Westholme, pastoral care is the heartbeat of our school; a deeply embedded ethos that shapes every pupil’s experience from Prep through to Sixth Form. We believe that children flourish when they feel safe, supported and known. That’s why our pastoral structure is designed to provide a caring and secure environment in which every pupil can realise their full academic, social, cultural and sporting potential.

There is a strong sense of community at Westholme. Our values are rooted in respect for every individual, thoughtfulness and courtesy — qualities that underpin the relationships between pupils, staff and families. From the moment children arrive on our beautiful campus, they are welcomed into a warm, inclusive atmosphere where kindness, empathy, resilience and self-discipline are not just encouraged but lived.

Led by Mrs J Gough, our Assistant Head (Wellbeing), our experienced team of Heads of Year and pastoral staff offer tailored support at every stage of a pupil’s journey. Whether through our robust transition programmes, a wraparound approach to an individual’s personal growth, or extensive co-curricular and leadership opportunities, we nurture confident, well-rounded children prepared for life beyond school.

Safeguarding is paramount, and our staff are expertly trained to uphold the highest standards of care. We also place great emphasis on attendance, emotional wellbeing and personal development — because when children feel secure and supported, they thrive.

At Westholme, pastoral care isn’t simply a system. It’s a promise for every child to work hard, be kind, and help every member of our Westholme community become the very best version of themselves.

School Nurses

School Nurses

Our School Nurses are very experienced and highly qualified. They are the first person to contact about any medical problems your child may have. They deal with the health needs of the whole school community and the physical wellbeing of every child attending school. If your child becomes unwell whilst at school we will contact you to come to school to collect your child.

When a student needs to bring prescribed medication into school, they should hand in the medication to the School Nurse, together with a letter from a parent detailing the dose and timing of the medication. It is the student’s responsibility to excuse themselves from lessons, collect their medication and take it under the supervision of the Nurse.

Wellbeing Advisors

Wellbeing Advisors

At school, we have a wellbeing advisor, Mrs Rachel Moody (a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) who works within Westholme.

She is available in school to listen to pupils and to talk about whatever is bothering or concerning them. Mrs Rachel Moody is based at Seniors but comes over to Prep two afternoons a week to work with children. Some of the common issues she has worked with children on are:

  • Parents separating or divorcing, and its impact on a child
  • Illness, bereavement or loss in any form
  • Feeling stressed or anxious

School Houses

Westholme Prep have 3 School houses – Falcons, Eagles and Ospreys. In Seniors and Sixth Form the School houses are Bowland, Calder Longridge, Pendle, which are led by Sixth Form pupils. Students compete in various competitions throughout the school year including: house singing, cross country, swimming, music, quizzes, pool competitions and much more.

The coveted house trophy is awarded at the end of each school year, at the Upper Senior Prize Giving. Belonging to a house fosters inter year group friendships, develops resilience and collaboration and it is also great fun!

Our library is a calm sanctuary at the heart of school life. Not only is it a wonderful place to study but it also provides opportunities each break and lunchtime for pupils to have a quiet place to connect with each other or spend some time reading or playing games.

Healthy Eating & Nutrition

Our School motto, Mens Sana in Corpore Sano, a healthy mind in a healthy body, is something we wholeheartedly embrace and actively empower our students to live by every day. At Westholme, meals are freshly prepared in our own kitchens by the wonderful Thomas Franks catering company. Our menus have been developed to be nutritionally balanced, and these rotate on a 3 week cycle.

Healthy eating is also embedded throughout pupils’ education at Westholme. Working in partnership with Thomas Franks, students take part in engaging nutrition workshops that explore the importance of balanced diets, healthy lifestyles and making informed food choices. These sessions help pupils develop lifelong habits that support both their physical wellbeing and academic success, reinforcing our commitment to educating the whole child.
