School Readiness

Starting school is a big moment for both children and parents. At Westholme Pre-Prep, our approach to school readiness is about far more than recognising letters and numbers. It is about helping your child feel confident, capable and excited to learn, with the independence and social skills that make the transition into Prep Reception feel natural and happy.

Our Pre-Prep Year (ages 3–4) is the perfect bridge between Nursery and the first formal year of school in Prep Reception, with a nurturing routine, purposeful play and gentle structure that helps children thrive.

What does “school readiness” mean?

Whilst every child develops in their own time, being school ready is a combination of developing vital independence and social and emotional intelligence which enables them to be ready for a more formal learning environment.

Confidence and curiosity
A willingness to try, explore, ask questions and enjoy new experiences.

Independence
Practical skills that help children manage their day with growing success.

Communication
Using language to express needs, feelings and ideas, and learning to listen to others.

Social skills and friendships
Sharing, taking turns, joining in games, resolving small conflicts and building kindness.

Early learning habits
Focus, resilience, following instructions, tidying away and transitioning calmly between activities.

How Westholme Pre-Prep supports school readiness

A calm, consistent routine

Children feel secure when they know what to expect. Our day includes a gentle rhythm of welcome time, play-based learning, outdoor exploration, stories, songs, snack, and calm transitions; helping children develop confidence within structure.

Purposeful play that builds real skills

Play is how young children learn best. In Pre-Prep, play is carefully planned and guided by skilled staff so that children are learning all the time – problem solving, developing language, strengthening fine motor control, developing imagination and learning how to work with others.

Growing independence, step by step

We help children practise the vital skills that make a big difference, such as:

  • putting on a coat and shoes and independently dressing
  • washing hands and managing personal hygiene
  • using cutlery at lunchtime and developing etiquette at the table
  • packing and unpacking their bag
  • recognising their belongings
  • tidying up and taking responsibility for shared spaces

These are taught in a warm, encouraging way, never rushed, always celebrated.

Communication and language-rich classrooms

Strong communication helps children feel confident and connected. Through stories, singing, conversation, role play and group time, children develop vocabulary, listening skills and the confidence to speak in front of others.

Social confidence and emotional wellbeing

Starting school is easier when children feel emotionally secure. Our staff focus on helping children recognise feelings, build resilience and develop positive relationships. We teach kindness, turn-taking, patience and empathy, so children feel ready to be part of a classroom community.

Early foundations in literacy and maths

In Pre-Prep, children begin building the foundations for reading, writing and number through playful, hands-on experiences:

  • listening to sounds, rhymes and patterns in language
  • mark making and early writing confidence
  • counting, sorting, matching and pattern building
  • fine motor activities to strengthen pencil control (cutting, threading, dough, tweezers, building)

It is not about pushing children forward too quickly, it is about building strong foundations, the right way, at the right time.
