And They’re Off!

The first week of our Norway Expedition has been nothing short of extraordinary, with Westholme pupils embracing every challenge and making the most of one of the most spectacular outdoor classrooms in the world.

After travelling from Manchester to Oslo, our expedition split into two teams, each embarking on a different adventure before later swapping activities. One group headed into the breathtaking wilderness of Jotunheimen National Park, while the other began an unforgettable five-day kayaking expedition through Norway’s world-famous fjords.

For the trekking team, the week has been filled with long days on rugged mountain trails, climbing through dramatic landscapes of towering peaks, glacial lakes and rushing waterfalls. Pupils planned their own routes, where they had to prepare meals and work together to navigate challenging terrain. Every summit reached has brought incredible panoramic views and an enormous sense of achievement, reminding everyone that the greatest rewards often come from the toughest climbs.

Meanwhile, the kayaking team has immersed themselves in the tranquillity of Norway’s fjords. Paddling through crystal-clear waters beneath towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls, they have experienced some of Europe’s most spectacular scenery from a truly unique perspective. The team wild camped on secluded beaches and spent evenings sharing stories beneath the sky, giving pupils a genuine taste of expedition life.

From setting up camp after long days of activity to adapting to changing weather conditions and supporting one another through physical and mental challenges, every pupil has shown remarkable determination and maturity.

With the first week complete, the adventure is far from over. The two teams are now preparing to swap activities, giving everyone the opportunity to experience both the challenge of trekking through Jotunheimen National Park and the unforgettable beauty of kayaking across Norway’s magnificent fjords.
