Geography Students Take Learning Beyond the Classroom on North Wales Residential

Our recent Geography residential to North Wales was a fantastic blend of fieldwork, teamwork and adventure, giving students the opportunity to bring their classroom learning to life in some truly spectacular locations.

The trip began in Llandudno, where students wasted no time getting stuck into their first investigation. Armed with ranging poles, clipboards and plenty of enthusiasm, they collected beach profile and coastal defence data along the shoreline. Despite the weather reminding us we were on the North Wales coast with a perfectly timed burst of rain at the end of the session, spirits remained high and valuable data was gathered.

From there, we made the journey across to Anglesey and our remote (but wonderfully cosy) accommodation. Reaching it proved to be an adventure in itself, but the stunning surroundings provided the perfect base for the rest of the trip. Not all of our fieldwork equipment survived the journey entirely intact, with one unfortunate casualty falling victim to some particularly enthusiastic data collection courtesy of Eesa!

One of the highlights of the residential came on Monday evening when students swapped geography for gastronomy. Working together in the self-catering kitchen, they demonstrated impressive culinary skills, producing a range of meals and proving they are just as capable with a frying pan as they are with a fieldwork survey sheet. Mrs Hall would certainly have been proud.

Day two brought much kinder weather as we headed to the beautiful Newborough Beach. With sunshine overhead and stunning coastal scenery all around, students carried out detailed sand dune investigations, examining how these important environments develop and change. The combination of excellent conditions, teamwork and hands-on learning made for a memorable day in the field.

Throughout the residential, students demonstrated independence and a fantastic attitude towards their studies. They embraced every challenge and collected a wealth of valuable data.

The trip was a tremendous success and provided an unforgettable opportunity to experience Geography beyond the classroom while creating plenty of memories along the way.
