Key Stage 3 – Computing

The modern economy values people who can generate original ideas, adapt to new challenges and innovate within real-world constraints. Creative and technical subjects encourage divergent and imaginative thinking, experimentation and risk-taking, and the ability to respond creatively to unfamiliar problems. In a world where many routine tasks are automated, creative intelligence is a defining human skill. 

Westholme’s curriculum develops students who are analytical, creative and adaptable thinkers, confident users and critical understanders of technology, ethically aware and socially responsible, and prepared for a digitally driven, rapidly changing world. 

Computing sits at the heart of these aims because it teaches pupils how digital systems work, how problems can be solved computationally and how technology shapes society. 

The modern world requires the ability to break complex problems into manageable steps, think logically and systematically, and design solutions that are efficient and reliable. 

Computer science teaches pupils to: 

  • Use algorithms and abstraction 
  • Apply logical reasoning and precision 
  • Test, debug and refine solutions

  • Independent, structured thinking

Computational thinking is therefore a core intellectual skill for the 21st century.
