All you need to know

AQA

There are two mandatory units which make up 50% of the course. These are:

  • DAW Production. A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is the name given to computer software used to record, create and mix audio content. We use ProTools, which is industry standard software.
  • Music and Sound for Media. This unit explores the different demands for music in the current industry, from promotional videos to animation, websites to apps, gaming to film.

There are a further three optional units, taken from a choice of four.

  • Creative Synthesis and Sampling: we create both Man Made and sampled sounds and then use the DAW to get really creative with them.
  • Remixing and Reworking: songs are constantly being remixed – but what does this involve?
  • Mixing and Mastering Techniques: how do we go from a recorded sound to a final mix? EQ, noise gates, compressors, reverb, delay and so much more….
  • Commercial Music Production: how to be successful in the industry?

Grade 5 or above in GCSE Music. GCSE Music is an advantage but not essential, though you will need to play a musical instrument or sing to Grade 5 or 6 standard.

It is expected that students undertaking the A Level Music course will act as musical role models to the rest of the school, participating in concerts and rehearsals. This will greatly improve performing skill leading to better marks in the performance component of the course.

You could be a recording engineer or a writer of music or this subject may be just an enjoyable pastime!

Most subjects relate to Music as it has its own use of Languages, Social Sciences, Science, Mathematical patterns, and so on. It can also be taken as a contrast to other subjects.
