National Apprenticeship Week: Real Pathways, Real Stories

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, pupils across the whole school took part in a day dedicated to exploring apprenticeship pathways and hearing first-hand from those who have chosen this exciting and increasingly popular route.

The day began with a whole-school assembly led by Mrs Hibberd, who introduced pupils to what apprenticeships are, how they work and the wide range of industries they now span. Pupils learned how apprenticeships combine paid employment with structured training, allowing young people to gain qualifications, skills and real workplace experience alongside their studies.

Following the assembly, Adam Roberts, who is currently undertaking an aerospace engineering apprenticeship, shared his personal journey into an apprenticeship. Adam spoke honestly about his experiences, the skills he has developed and the opportunities available within the apprenticeship pathway, helping pupils to understand the long-term career potential apprenticeships can offer.

In Period 1, Year 11 and INSPIRED Sixth Form students attended a further session featuring a panel of current apprentices:

Each speaker shared their own route into apprenticeships, offering insight into application processes, day-to-day working life and how they balance professional responsibilities with ongoing learning. Their stories highlighted the breadth of sectors now offering apprenticeships and the value employers place on motivated, skilled young people.

To conclude the day, INSPIRED Sixth Form students were given the opportunity to take part in one-to-one conversations with each apprentice. These informal discussions allowed students to ask questions, seek advice and gain tailored guidance based on their own interests and aspirations.

National Apprenticeship Week provided pupils with a valuable insight into alternative pathways beyond traditional university routes, reinforcing Westholme’s commitment to supporting informed choices and preparing students for success in the world beyond school.
