Our Silver Duke of Edinburgh participants spent the half-term break completing their qualifier expedition in the Yorkshire Dales, displaying grit, teamwork and remarkable resilience in demanding conditions. Working with Sam Sykes Expeditions under the leadership of expedition manager Mark, pupils covered just over 32 miles across three strenuous days and nights.

An early 7am start set the tone on Day One, as groups set out on an 11-mile loop around Ingleborough to begin their route and test their pacing and navigation under pressure. On Day Two they returned to Ingleborough in low cloud and persistent winds before tackling the tough ascent of Pen-y-Ghent. Conditions called for careful decision making and mutual support, with groups pacing, spotting and route-finding collaboratively throughout.

The final day brought tired legs but strong spirits as the teams finished their route back towards Horton-in-Ribblesdale to complete their distance and sign off the final checkpoints. Across the three days they demonstrated the full spectrum of expedition skills: campcraft, kit management, map reading, timing to schedule and caring for each other when fatigue set in.

Staff reported excellent behaviour, determined mindsets and a mature approach to challenge from all participants. We extend sincere thanks to Sam Sykes Expeditions and to Mark for expert guidance, instruction and safeguarding throughout.

A huge well done to all our Silver candidates for meeting the challenge with such composure and resolve. They have earned every mile and every moment of rest that follows.
