Year 12 Biologists Bring Ecology to Life in the Lake District

Year 12 Biology students recently enjoyed a two-day residential visit to the Field Studies Centre at Blencathra in the heart of the Lake District, gaining valuable hands-on experience of ecological fieldwork as part of their A Level studies.

Ecology is a key component of the A Level Biology curriculum, and the residential provided an excellent opportunity for students to move beyond the classroom and experience first-hand the techniques and investigations used by professional field scientists. Throughout the visit, students combined practical fieldwork with classroom-based sessions, helping them make clear links between biological theory and real-world ecosystems.

Over the course of the trip, students carried out a range of investigations designed to develop their understanding of ecological processes and environmental factors. One study focused on freshwater ecosystems, where students examined the variety of organisms present and assessed the health of aquatic habitats. Another investigation explored the impact of altitude on plant species, allowing students to observe how environmental conditions influence the distribution and abundance of vegetation across different habitats.

Students used a variety of specialist equipment to measure environmental factors including temperature, humidity, wind speed, water flow and altitude. They also undertook biological sampling, collecting data on plant and animal species and learning how ecologists gather reliable evidence in the field.

The residential was not only an opportunity to develop practical scientific skills but also to strengthen students’ abilities in analysing data, presenting results and drawing evidence-based conclusions. These are essential skills for success at A Level and beyond, providing excellent preparation for university study and careers in science-related fields.

Despite some wet and windy conditions on the Friday, the students approached every challenge with enthusiasm and resilience. Their determination was rewarded on Saturday with much improved weather, allowing them to make the most of the spectacular Lake District surroundings while completing their fieldwork investigations.

The trip proved to be both educational and enjoyable, with students collecting high-quality data sets and gaining a deeper understanding of the ecological principles they study in lessons. Experiences such as these play an important role in enriching learning, helping students to see how biology applies beyond textbooks and into the natural world around them.
