Our Year 12 students recently took part in a dedicated UCAS Day, designed to support them as they begin preparing for life beyond Westholme and explore the many opportunities available to them after Sixth Form.
The day formed part of our wider commitment to ensuring every student feels informed and well-prepared as they begin considering their future pathways. Through a carefully planned programme of talks and workshops, students gained valuable insight into the university application process and the steps required to build strong, authentic applications.
Throughout the day, students attended a range of focused sessions aimed at helping them navigate the UCAS journey with confidence. Sessions included guidance on the UCAS application system, advice on researching courses and universities, and dedicated support on how to approach one of the most important aspects of the application process – the personal statement.
We were also delighted to welcome Jacob O’Neill from Lancaster University, who delivered an insightful guest session to students. Jacob shared valuable advice about university life, the transition from Sixth Form to higher education and what universities are really looking for in applicants. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions and gain a clearer understanding of the choices and opportunities available to them.
A dedicated Personal Statement Workshop encouraged students to reflect on their interests, achievements, experiences and aspirations, helping them begin to shape compelling applications that showcase both their academic strengths and personal qualities. Students were then given dedicated time to begin drafting and developing their own statements with support and guidance from staff.
The day encouraged students to think carefully about their future ambitions and how they can best present themselves within increasingly competitive university applications. It also provided reassurance and clarity around what can often feel like a daunting process for young people beginning to make decisions about their future.
