Prep 2 Get Creative at The Lowry

Today, Prep 2 enjoyed an inspiring trip to The Lowry in Salford, where they took part in a drawing and mark-making workshop that brought art to life. The session began with pupils sketching in the galleries, using a variety of materials such as ink, graphite, pastels and chalk to explore different ways of making marks and expressing texture, tone and movement.

Building on what they had learned earlier in the week with visiting artist Bob Sutcliffe MBE, pupils were encouraged to experiment with techniques inspired by L.S. Lowry’s distinctive style. One of the highlights of the day was stepping inside the 360-degree cinema experience of Lowry’s famous painting ‘Going to the Match’, where the children were surrounded by the sights and sounds of matchday life – from cheering crowds to the bustling streets of Salford.

In the afternoon, pupils explored The Lowry’s galleries, taking time to observe original works by the artist and reflect on how his unique use of perspective and colour captured the spirit of Northern life. They also enjoyed the vibrant Quentin Blake exhibition, which provided a joyful contrast to Lowry’s industrial scenes and inspired plenty of creative discussion.

It was a day full of creativity, discovery and artistic inspiration – one that will undoubtedly influence Prep 2’s own masterpieces back in the classroom.
