INSPIRED Sixth Form Explore Future Careers at BAE Systems

Earlier today, INSPIRED Sixth Form students had the fantastic opportunity to visit BAE Systems in Samlesbury for an immersive experience event at the Academy for Skills and Knowledge. The visit was designed to give students a detailed insight into the vast array of Higher and Degree Apprenticeships available at one of the UK’s leading engineering employers.

The trip was particularly relevant for many of our Year 13 students, several of whom are currently preparing apprenticeship applications. With a strong Westholme history of students securing places at BAE Systems in areas such as Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing, and Business Services, this visit provided invaluable context and motivation for those aiming to follow a similar path.

Students began the morning with an introduction to the apprenticeship pathways, learning about the skills, attributes and qualifications required for different roles within the company. They then took part in an Employability Workshop, where BAE staff discussed the application process in detail, sharing helpful insights about interviews, assessment behaviours and the importance of showcasing personal strengths. It was especially reassuring to hear BAE emphasise the value of wider skillsets—something Westholme students develop consistently through our 21st Century curriculum and rich co-curricular programme.
