Blackburn Rovers Deliver High-Quality Football Masterclass at Westholme

This week, we welcomed eight Academy coaches from Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 22 November for a memorable football masterclass that brought professional-level expertise directly to our campus. Building on the letter sent to families earlier in the week, the session formed the first step in a new and exciting relationship between Westholme and Blackburn Rovers FC.

More than 50 students from Years 7–10 took part, with boys and girls joining the morning’s activities on the main field. The coaches delivered four dynamic training stations based on Academy methodology, including ball-control drills, attacking combinations, positional understanding and small-sided tactical challenges. From the moment the coaches arrived, their energy, organisation and passion for youth development set the tone for an outstanding morning of football.

The pupils responded brilliantly, embracing the fast-paced activities with enthusiasm, teamwork and resilience. The session offered them an authentic taste of the standards expected of Academy players, mirroring the daily training environment at Blackburn Rovers. Students also had time to speak with the visiting staff, asking questions about football pathways, academy life and the commitment required to progress in the sport.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from each other, but this partnership isn’t just about football and education – it’s about creating opportunities that make a real difference for young people and the wider community. Together, we want to help them grow, achieve, and inspire others both on and off the pitch.”

This collaboration marks an exciting new chapter for the school. Both Westholme’s sports department and Blackburn Rovers Academy staff are eager to build on this foundation, exploring future joint opportunities, development pathways and further masterclass sessions. With several pupils already demonstrating strong potential, the prospect of strengthening this relationship is particularly exciting.

The morning concluded with coaches expressing their admiration for the pupils’ positive attitude, ability and willingness to learn. Westholme staff echoed this pride, noting the value of experiences that blend ambition with enjoyment.

We are awaiting confirmation from Blackburn Rovers regarding how they intend to use the photographs taken during the session, including where they will be published and the accompanying write-up.

This football masterclass follows a similar initiative taking place this weekend, with Lancashire Hockey coaches visiting school to deliver a specialist session—another step in expanding high-quality sporting partnerships for our pupils.
