Prep 6 Create Bold Abstract Art with Visiting Artist Bob Sutcliffe

Prep 6 were treated to an inspiring creative experience this week as visiting artist Bob Sutcliffe delivered an immersive workshop based on the dynamic abstract style of American artist Reggie Laurent. Bob began the session by introducing pupils to Laurent’s hallmark techniques – vibrant colours, layered shapes and bold compositions that appear spontaneous yet carefully balanced. With this inspiration in mind, pupils set to work creating their own abstract pieces.

Using a wide selection of pre-cut shapes in different sizes, colours and textures, pupils experimented with positioning and pattern to emulate Laurent’s energetic, ununiform style. The room quickly filled with colour as the children explored how overlapping, contrasting and rotating shapes could change the mood and movement of a piece. Bob encouraged them to make brave artistic choices and to trust their instincts, resulting in a collection of expressive and highly individual artworks.

A key part of the workshop was Bob’s discussion about how art extends far beyond the studio. He highlighted the many careers shaped by creativity, including architecture, graphic design, animation, filmmaking, fashion, game design, engineering, advertising, illustration, interior design, product design, web design and marketing. This conversation opened pupils’ eyes to the many ways artistic thinking influences the world around them, reinforcing that creativity is a valuable skill for life.

The workshop provided an excellent blend of hands-on learning and wider understanding. Pupils left feeling inspired, confident and proud of what they had produced, with a new appreciation for how art connects to countless industries and opportunities. It was a memorable and enriching experience for Prep 6 and a wonderful celebration of creativity at Westholme.
