National Maths Week Challenge: The Giant Pyramid Project

National Maths Week 2025 provided the perfect opportunity for our Maths department to introduce a creative and memorable challenge for Year 7: constructing a giant pyramid in the Sports Hall. Far from a simple task, this activity required students to use a wide range of mathematical skills, including calculating dimensions, understanding geometric principles, estimating quantities and considering structural stability.

From the moment the challenge was announced, excitement began to spread. Students approached the task with enthusiasm, working in teams to plan their approach before gathering materials and beginning construction. What made the experience even more enriching was the support of our Sixth Form mathematicians, who volunteered their time to assist the younger pupils. Their guidance helped bridge gaps in understanding, encouraged strategic thinking and allowed students to see how mathematical reasoning can be applied collaboratively to solve complex, real-world problems.

The Sports Hall quickly filled with energy as groups experimented with different configurations, made adjustments and learned from trial and error. This practical approach enabled students to see mathematics not simply as numbers on a page, but as a powerful tool for creation and problem-solving. The final pyramid was a striking example of what teamwork, patience and logical thinking can achieve.

Beyond the mathematical aspects, the activity served as a valuable team-building exercise. Students practised communication, leadership, resilience and cooperation, all of which are essential skills both inside and outside the classroom. By the end of the session, the sense of achievement was shared by all.

Well done to every Year 7 student who took part and to our Sixth Formers for their brilliant support. It was a wonderful celebration of mathematics in action and a highlight of National Maths Week 2025!
