Senior students were treated to an inspiring and thought-provoking session this week with Matt Messias, former Premier League and international football referee, who visited Westholme to speak about performing under pressure.
Drawing on his extensive experience officiating at the highest levels of professional sport, as well as his current work as an executive coach and leadership consultant, Matt offered fascinating insights into how pressure affects performance, both on and off the field. He shared personal stories from his time refereeing some of football’s biggest matches, where every decision was scrutinised by players, managers, and millions of fans around the world.
Through engaging discussion and interactive reflection, students explored the importance of self-awareness, emotional control, and resilience in high-stakes environments. Matt spoke about the 6 C’s of Transformational Optimism:
His message was clear: pressure is not something to fear, but something to understand and use as a tool for growth.
The session was both motivational and deeply relevant, encouraging students to apply these strategies across all aspects of life, from exams and sport to leadership and future careers.
