Students in Year 8 enjoyed a fantastic educational visit to Chester Zoo, combining hands-on science learning with the opportunity to explore one of the UK’s leading conservation zoos.
Although the day began with a little rain, spirits remained high and the weather soon improved, allowing pupils to make the most of their visit. Throughout the day, students encountered an incredible range of animals from across the globe, including capybaras, elephants, penguins, butterflies and giant tortoises. One of the highlights for many was the bat cave, where students experienced the fascinating nocturnal environment up close.
Alongside exploring the zoo, students also took part in an engaging educational workshop led by the zoo’s expert education team, focusing on evolution and adaptation. The session encouraged students to think like scientists as they explored how environments influence the appearance, behaviour and survival of different species.
Following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin, pupils investigated the process of evolution through natural selection and discovered how animals develop extraordinary adaptations over time to survive in their habitats. From camouflage and specialised diets to unique physical characteristics, the workshop brought classroom learning to life in an interactive and memorable way.
The trip provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of biology beyond the classroom while also appreciating the importance of conservation and protecting endangered species around the world.
Of course, no visit to the zoo would be complete without a stop for ice cream, making it a thoroughly enjoyable day for everyone involved.
