A Time to Remember: Westholme Reflects on Courage and Sacrifice

This week, the Westholme community united in remembrance to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served.

On Sunday, students attended the Remembrance Service at Blackburn Cathedral, laying a wreath of poppies in tribute to the brave men and women whose service has shaped our freedom. The students took part in a moment of reflection, standing alongside veterans, families and members of the local community. Following the service, Rt Revd Philip North spoke personally with our pupils, sharing his thoughts on the meaning of remembrance and the importance of gratitude and compassion in everyday life.

On Tuesday morning, Westholme held its own act of remembrance. At 11 o’clock, Senior School, Sixth Form and Prep 5 and 6 gathered in the Croston Theatre for an assembly led by Mr Fuller. He reflected on the importance of remembrance and the values of courage, service and hope. The assembly concluded with The Last Post, creating a moment of quiet reflection across the hall.

At the same time, younger Prep pupils joined Mrs Milnes in the Prep Hall to learn why we wear poppies and how remembrance helps us to honour those who gave their lives in service.

Finally, Mr Taylor, together with staff and students, laid a wreath of poppies beneath the flagpole. The simple act brought together the entire Westholme community in a shared moment of gratitude and remembrance.

Through these acts of reflection, our students were reminded that remembrance is not only about the past but also about the values we carry forward: respect, kindness and hope for peace in the future.
