Criminology Club enjoyed an insightful and impactful afternoon this week as we welcomed speakers from Red Rose Recovery, an organisation dedicated to supporting individuals affected by addiction and helping them rebuild their lives. The session provided our Senior and INSPIRED Sixth Form students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with people who have experienced first-hand the challenges of substance misuse, the realities of the criminal justice system and the long journey toward recovery.
From the moment the speakers began sharing their stories, the room fell completely silent. Their honesty, courage and willingness to talk openly about the mistakes they had made and the obstacles they had faced created a powerful atmosphere that held students’ attention throughout. They explored themes such as mental health, peer pressure, the impact of choices and the importance of stable support networks—issues that strongly resonated with our young people.
What followed was an exceptional Q&A, with students asking thoughtful, mature and compassionate questions. They were keen to understand not only the speakers’ experiences but also the wider societal factors that contribute to crime and addiction. The conversation naturally expanded to include rehabilitation, stigma, community work and the role organisations like Red Rose Recovery play in reducing reoffending and supporting long-term wellbeing.
Staff praised the students for their sensitivity and engagement, noting how clearly they demonstrated the critical thinking and empathy central to the study of criminology. Many pupils commented afterwards on how the session had changed their perspective on crime, justice and the value of second chances.
We are incredibly grateful to Red Rose Recovery for giving their time so generously and for offering such an honest insight into the complexities of addiction and rehabilitation. Their visit has left a lasting impression on our students and has enriched the Criminology Club programme in a truly meaningful way.
