The Music department enjoyed a brilliant weekend in London last week!

Departing from Preston station early on the Friday, students headed south to experience some West End culture.

Having arrived in the capital, the group headed to the Victoria Apollo to see the hit musical Wicked, now in its 20^th year there. The song ‘Defying Gravity‘ is a GCSE Music set piece, so it was amazing to see the song in its natural habitat – within the context of the musical.

Saturday morning gave everyone a pleasant walk through Hyde Park on their way to the Royal College of Music’s museum, where students could see the differences between modern pianos and those of the late 1700s, as well as seeing other, perhaps less usual, instruments which feature in the GCSE Music syllabus, such as the Uilleann Pipes and a Hurdy-Gurdy.

Some time for shopping followed, before entering the Royal Albert Hall to hear an awe-inspiring concert featuring Rachmaninov’s amazing 2^nd piano concerto and Holst’s ‘The Planets’.
