No Ordinary Sum: Sixth Form Team Cracks Global Maths Challenge

Westholme’s INSPIRED Sixth Form mathematicians have achieved an excellent result in the international Ritangle competition, an advanced challenge for teams of students aged 16–18 studying A Level Mathematics or equivalent.

Led by William, the Westholme team of Alfie, Oscar, Lewys, Will, Nikodem and Zain competed against more than 1,800 teams worldwide in the 2025 competition.

Running over ten weeks and three demanding stages, the competition required teams to solve increasingly complex problems, with each correct solution unlocking information needed to progress. Only around one third of teams reached the final stage.

Westholme’s team completed all but the final task in Stage 3, a level achieved by only the top 20 per cent of participants. Their achievement is recognised on the MEI website and reflects exceptional resilience, teamwork and advanced problem-solving, supported by the strong culture of academic excellence within Westholme’s INSPIRED Sixth Form.
