During the Prep Netball Tournament, Year 10 student Niamh successfully passed her Into Officiating qualification. This achievement marks an exciting milestone, as she is now a qualified umpire and has begun her journey towards further officiating qualifications within the sport.
The Into Officiating course is the first step on the officiating pathway, equipping participants with a strong understanding of the rules, accurate scorekeeping skills, and the confidence and positioning required to officiate matches effectively at school and grassroots level. Throughout the course, Niamh developed her knowledge of the game from a new perspective, learning how to make clear, consistent decisions while maintaining control of play and ensuring a positive experience for all participants.
What makes this achievement particularly special is that Niamh was able to put her learning into practice in a live sporting environment. Officiating during the Prep Netball Tournament, she demonstrated composure, confidence and professionalism, managing matches with fairness and authority. Her ability to apply the rules accurately, communicate effectively with players and keep the games flowing smoothly was evident throughout the afternoon.
Taking on an officiating role requires a different skill set to playing, including decision-making under pressure, strong communication and leadership. Niamh embraced this challenge fully, showing maturity beyond her years and a willingness to step outside of her comfort zone. Her contribution also played an important role in ensuring the success of the tournament, supporting younger pupils and helping to create a positive and inclusive sporting atmosphere.
This accomplishment reflects both Niamh’s personal commitment and the wider opportunities available within sport at Westholme. Encouraging pupils to explore roles beyond participation, such as officiating and leadership, is a key part of developing confidence, responsibility and a deeper understanding of sport.
We are incredibly proud of Niamh’s success and look forward to seeing her continue to progress along the officiating pathway in the future.
