The Prep Carol Service at Blackburn Cathedral was a truly joyous celebration that brought together pupils, families and staff for a heart-warming afternoon of music and festive reflection. Set within the stunning surroundings of the cathedral, the occasion provided a beautiful opportunity for our youngest performers to share the spirit of Christmas through traditional readings, uplifting carols and confident musical performances.
The service opened with a warm welcome from Reverend Canon Andrew Horsfall, who spoke about the joy of coming together as a community at this special time of year. Our Prep pupils filled the cathedral with wonderful singing, delivering much-loved carols including O Come All Ye Faithful, Away in a Manger, Little Donkey and Once in Royal David’s City. Their enthusiasm and clear voices created a magical atmosphere that resonated throughout the historic space.
Interspersed between the carols were thoughtful readings from pupils across the Prep year groups. Each child read with clarity and confidence, sharing the story of the Nativity and reminding everyone of the timeless message at the heart of Christmas. These moments of reflection were complemented by musical contributions from small vocal groups and instrumentalists, who performed with poise beyond their years.
Families filled the pews in support, and their pride was evident as the children showcased weeks of careful preparation. Staff across the Prep and Music departments worked tirelessly to ensure the service ran smoothly, and their dedication was reflected in the polished performances and calm confidence of the pupils.
A collection was taken in support of St Catherine’s Hospice, with parents and guests giving generously to a charity close to our community’s heart. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed.
Westholme is deeply grateful to Blackburn Cathedral for once again hosting us so warmly, and to the cathedral staff who helped make the service such a memorable occasion. It was a beautiful celebration of music, community and the joy of Christmas, and a perfect way to bring our Prep family together at the end of term.
