On Friday morning, we were delighted to welcome Genevieve Boast, Group Head of Sustainability at Thomas Franks, to speak with our Student Council, Food Council and Charity Team about launching the Food Waste Challenge at Westholme.
Students from Years 7–12 came together for an engaging, thought-provoking and eye-opening session, showing fantastic enthusiasm and maturity throughout. Food waste is a critically important issue for our environment, and pupils were encouraged to consider the scale of the challenge, exploring how much food is wasted globally, nationally and within our own school community.
The session sparked meaningful discussion, with students confidently sharing ideas and beginning to shape practical initiatives that could be introduced at Westholme. From awareness campaigns to measurable reduction strategies, it was inspiring to see our pupils thinking creatively and collaboratively about real-world impact.
Importantly, the session also highlighted the link between sustainability and personal responsibility, encouraging students to reflect on their own habits and how small changes can contribute to a much bigger difference. It was a powerful reminder of the role young people can play in shaping a more sustainable future.
We are excited to build on this momentum and begin implementing student-led initiatives across the school. This marks the start of an important journey for our community, and we look forward to sharing updates as the Food Waste Challenge develops.
