Westholme Pupils Experience Blackburn Rovers Match and BRIC Centre Masterclass

Our growing collaboration with Blackburn Rovers took another exciting step this week as 35 pupils from boys’ and girls’ sport enjoyed a memorable evening of football, learning and shared experiences. The event combined fun, development and professional insight—perfectly reflecting the ambition of this developing partnership.

The evening began at school, where pupils enjoyed pizza and chips before heading to the BRIC Centre: the impressive indoor facility operated by the Blackburn Rovers Community Trust. Once inside, pupils made full use of the pitches, taking part in a series of friendly 5-a-side and 7-a-side matches. The games were energetic, good-natured and filled with skill, giving pupils a great warm-up before watching the professionals later in the evening.

Afterwards, the group walked over to Ewood Park for the Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and QPR. Under the floodlights, the stadium atmosphere was electric, even if it was the visitors who secured a 0–1 win. For many pupils, it was their first time watching a live match at Ewood Park, making the occasion even more special.

A key aim of the trip was to support pupils’ sporting understanding as well as their enjoyment. During the first half, pupils were encouraged to analyse Rovers’ play, noting the limited penetration into the opposition box and the low number of shots on target—valuable observational skills linked to their development in school sport.

The visit not only offered an exciting night out but also strengthened the relationship between Westholme and Blackburn Rovers. With recent coaching masterclasses already underway and more opportunities planned, this partnership continues to offer meaningful experiences for our young athletes.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching evening—one that pupils will remember for a long time.
