Prep & ISF Welcome MP Adnan Hussain for UK Parliament Week

Prep enjoyed a truly inspiring and educational experience this week as they took part in UK Parliament Week, diving into the world of democracy, decision-making and British politics. The week began with a special Monday assembly led by School Council, who introduced the purpose of Parliament Week and unveiled this year’s whole-school election focus: wellbeing. After thoughtful discussion in earlier Council meetings, the pupils agreed on two meaningful initiatives for the school community to vote on—a buddy system to promote friendship and support, or a dedicated mindfulness space to encourage calm and reflection. Ballot papers will be collected at the end of the week, with votes counted before Christmas in true democratic style.

Throughout the week, Prep classes engaged in a variety of linked activities designed to broaden their understanding of citizenship. Pupils created colourful manifesto posters, held class votes including “Star of the Week,” and explored how democratic systems allow everyone a voice. These activities helped demystify politics and show that decision-making is something even young people can participate in.

The highlight of the week came on Friday, when School Council representatives, Upper Prep students and members of the ISF welcomed local MP Mr Adnan Hussain into school. Mr Hussain generously took time out of his busy schedule to meet the children, share how he began his journey in politics and answer a wide range of thoughtful questions prepared by the pupils. From what inspired him to become an MP to the challenges and rewards of the role, the children were fascinated by his responses and appreciated the chance to speak directly with an elected representative.

The week offered an excellent blend of learning, engagement and real-world connection and helped empower pupils to understand the importance of their voices within a community.
